4 Porto’s Coolest Stores with Coffee Shops Inside

Coffee shops are the 21st century taverns. They might be cleaner, more sophisticated and serve healthier options, but at the end of the day, they’re still the places we flock to after a long day of work, to have a chat with friends while sipping a drink. And, as a plus, you don’t get the “drunk” label for spending hours there (however – be warned – you might get the “hipster” one)! Although you’ll find plenty of great coffee shops in Porto, today we’ll be focusing on stores or establishments where you will be served great coffee in a different atmosphere.

CHELO COAST HOUSE

If you are looking for a miniature melting pot by the beach, then this coast house is definitely right up your alley! The project of Marie and Marcelo – a French-Chilean duo – this amazingly decorated space offers much more than your average coffee shop, since it is also a bike shop with a free repair section everyone can use. Besides, there’s also a small display of surf gear by famous outdoor clothing brand Patagonia! With a great background soundtrack, big windows overlooking the sea promenade and bicycles hanging from every wall, here you will be able to enjoy delicious healthy snacks – such as crunchy toasts with butter and honey and rich hummus sandwiches – always accompanied (obviously) by some great coffee or hot coco! Chelo is open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10am and 7pm.

With its retro decoration, wooden bookshelves and exposed second-hand objects (which you can buy btw), Alambique is the home of everything vintage. It’s almost like venturing into our grandparent’s attic – only with coffee, brownies and biscuits! The atmosphere is incredibly cozy here, especially on rainy days where you can spend your afternoon restoring your sugar levels while surrounded by books and trinkets. Alambique is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 7pm.

TERRÁREA

If our previous entry is the perfect spot for the winter, then Terrárea is its summer-ish counterpart! Located in Matosinhos, Terrárea is a giant flower shop with a lovely vegan café. Needless to say, this is a quite distinctive coffee shop. After all, where else can you have healthy light meals or take a sip of everyone’s favourite drink while surrounded with all kinds of lush plants and colourful flowers? It’s an idyllic over-the-top green scenery – which is why Terrárea should be a must on every tree-hugger’s list of places to stop-by during a visit to Porto. Terrárea is open from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 8pm.

People love causes, don’t they? In a world where everyone seems to be in a rush and where information is constantly shoved directly into our ears (and phones), we all need a place where we can stop for a minute and actually think. Galeria Manifesto strives to be that place! As a project whose main goal is not to generate profit but to promote critical thinking, at Galeria Manifesto you will find independent newspapers, international magazines, photo exhibitions and travel-related workshops. However, keep in mind it’s always harder to think on an empty stomach, which is why they also have a small coffee shop where they serve premium coffee and other snacks such as sweet cakes or home-made cookies. “Food for thought” – so they say! Galeria Manifesto is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 7pm.
