Welcome to Southern Europe, where football (or soccer as you might call it if you have a death wish) is a way of life! Here, crowds treat game days with festivities, fans pilgrimaging their way to the stadiums and locals flooding the bars, cafes and tascas, looking for a place where to feel some thrills for 90 minutes. We know you might be here on vacation, but your love for your favourite team doesn’t really take any days off, does it? Rest assured though, international football is also a big thing here and therefore you can easily find places where to watch the major foreign leagues, as well as European competitions. If you’re looking for the best sports bars in the city, you’ve come to the right place.
HERE ARE 5 SPORTS BARS IN PORTO WHERE YOU CAN WATCH FOOTBALL AND HAVE A PINT
CAFÉ PIOLHO
Officially named Âncora d’Ouro but fondly called Piolho (Portuguese for “Louse”), this is probably the most beloved café among Porto’s student community. Popular for its dirt cheap beer, youthful vibe and partying atmosphere, Café Piolho is an amazing place to watch football, especially when we’re talking about those big matches that draw everybody’s attention to the small screen. Besides, as this is also a pretty hip place for Erasmus students, there is a good chance you’ll find someone in your exact position, nervously biting their nails while rooting for the same team. Café Piolho is open from Monday to Saturday between 7am and 4am.

GUINDALENSE

Where best to watch sports than in the actual headquarters of a football club?! Although Guindalense could just be yet another unassuming tiny local club, its premises and the amazing views from its outside terrace have granted it a small-scale cult following. Though it can be hard to focus on the telly when you have a view like that on the background, this place gets absolutely packed for big matches, so it might be wise to book ahead if you want to sit down and watch your team playing there. Guindalense is open from Monday to Saturday between noon and 11pm.

ADEGA SPORTS BAR

It’s written in its name folks. Although this place is fairly recent (2017), it keeps up with a local sports bar trend that has been lost over the last decade or so in Porto – football scarves galore! As you step in, you’ll notice many of these colourful props decorating the walls and the ceiling, which along with the cheap beer, the 8 screens broadcasting different matches and the sharp sound of foosball shots in the background make Adega feel the quintessential sports bar in the city. Adega Sports Bar is open Monday to Friday from 5pm to 4am, Saturday 2pm to 4am and Sunday 4pm to 2am ( they also open earlier during major game days).

CLUBE PORTO RUGBY

Located inside one of the very first recreational organizations created in Porto (the revered Clube do Ateneu back in 1869), this sports bar is – as its unofficial slogan states – “where the 3rd half is played”. That’s because Clube Porto Rugby is not only a great place to catch a game, with its infectious atmosphere and giant tv screens, but also the perfect spot to spend time and blow off some steam after a match’s emotions. Besides, drinking a cold one, listening to some music and playing pool sounds like a nice way to celebrate an important win or – worst case scenario – cry over a crushing defeat! Clube Porto Rugby is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 7pm and 2am.

CUFRA

Forget the hot dogs, the popcorn and the pretzels. When watching football at a restaurant or a sports bar, the Francesinha must be your snack (yeah right, more like a feast) of choice – especially when in Porto! And if you’re looking out for the place that offers the best overall experience regarding sports atmosphere, service and quality of this delicacy, then Cufra is the place to go! This beerhouse/seafood restaurant (a weird yet usual combination here in Porto) is one of those old places local millennials grew up going to with their families for special occasions, so come mingle with the locals and witness first-hand why people say classics never die! Cufra is open from Tuesday to Sunday between noon and 2am.
As you can see, there is no reason for your team to miss your unquestionable, undisputed support! But which one of these sports bars will you be paying a visit? Let us know on the comments section!
