intenational womenss day in Porto

What’s Porto Doing For International Women’s Day?

On the 8th of March it’s all about women power, and of course this day could not go by unnoticed here in Porto.

If looking at the breathtaking views of the city is not enough to put you in a good mood, there are other things happening around town that will definitely make us girls smile. As we are all superwomen, we deserve the best. And sometimes even the smallest gestures are enough to make our day a little bit better.

What is the city doing?

There’s no better way to celebrate women than with flowers.

Around this time of the year Porto celebrates “Semana das Camélias”. Camélias are a beautiful flower that was brought to Porto all the way from Japan in the XIX century, and you can spot them all over the city.

The event kicks off on the 3rd of March with an exhibit where the finest flowers will be displayed at Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória (Google maps). During that weekend there will also be other activities available like shadow theater, a tea ceremony and several workshops.

You can find more information about the event program here (pdf 4.5Mb). Be aware that the content is in Portuguese only.

And if you are not available during the weekend, until the 12th of March the street lamps of the most iconic gardens in Porto (Rua de São Bento da Vitória, Jardim da Cordoaria, Jardim do Carregal, Passeio das Virtudes) will be adorned with works inspired by the Camélias. It’s the perfect excuse to go for a walk or watch the sunset on women’s day, and you might even be handed a flower or a poem while you are out. It’s just the way of the city to reward us girls on this very special day.

Trindade and Casa da Música metro stations will also be decorated with flowers, so even if you’re running to get somewhere you won’t be able to escape them.

Creative day dedicated to women at Casa Bô

If you are looking for something different and more alternative, Casa Bô is just the place for you. They are a non-profit Cultural, Environmental and Social Solidarity Association, that focus on holistic development and general happiness.

On Women’s day, you are invited to participate in an event to honor women and their creativity, with a lot of activities, food and surprises involved. The themes this year are lunar cycles, nature, and the role of women in contemporary society.

You can also visit their small store that will have new pieces available by several new artists.

Born and raised by the sea but in love with Porto since I can remember. My biggest passions are music, books and cinema, and I’m slightly obsessed with collecting vinyl records and drinking coffee. You can always find me way too deep into my own thoughts. Is there life on Mars?
