With welcoming sunny days it’s time for the first spring festivals, enjoying the outdoors (with some music in the background) and to fight for women’s empowerment. The city is living and breathing art and culture, so it’s time to take it all in!

FITEI – Festival Internacional de Teatro de Expressão Ibérica 2019

Festival Dias de Dança (DDD) and FITEI joined forces in order to fill Porto and other cities with culture, dance and theater. This edition will include several curators and art directors from all over the world while highlighting Brazil and introducing new, up and coming artists. The programme also includes a special week (8th-12thMay) focused on dance and theater performances by Portuguese artists, DJS and a photo exhibition.

Kamasi Washington | Gig Club

American saxophonist Kamasi Washington will be playing at Hard Club on May 10th, a concert put together by the community of music lovers Gig Club.
Washington is often praised for his modern jazz and for bringing big band jazz into prominence. His latest album “Heaven and Earth” clearly shows his genius, a must-listen before a concert where you’ll definitely have a chill and groovy time.

Porto Blues Fest

May is also time to welcome the third edition of Porto Blues Fest. The festival is all about music but this time it will also focus on the gastronomic side of things, taking inspiration from New Orleans and bringing not only the best music but also some delicious food that you’ll be able to sample. The line-up includes Juwana Jenkins, Gwyn Ashton and a concert paying homage to German pianist Wolfram Minnemann by the Minnemann Blues Band.

Festival Feminista do Porto

The 4thedition of Festival Feminista do Porto will focus on “Feminine Praxis”, fighting intolerance, hate speeches and violence, while paying homage to Brazilian sociologist and human rights advocate Marielle Franco. The festival plans to shed light on what it means to be a woman today and how we should fight towards a more inclusive society. The program includes more than 70 activities, such as workshops, concerts, lectures and performances. You just have to keep an eye on the facebook page and website if you want to feel the pink power during the month of May!

North Music Festival

It’s time to open Festival Season and “the compass points north”.
With a privileged location close to Rio Douro, North Music Festival is here to stay after receiving more than 25000 visitors last year for its second edition. The line-up is better than ever, welcoming iconic bands like Bush and Franz Ferdinand, new-comers Bastille, but always saving some room for Portuguese music with Capitão Fausto and Glockenwise. The festival has three different stages, two food courts and wine gardens where wine tastings are mandatory.

Serralves em festa

Serralves em festa is the perfect ending to your month. It’s a 50-hour non-stop party, starting at 6 pm on Friday until 10 pm on Sunday.
This celebration is still the biggest contemporary arts festival in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe, attracting hundreds of spectators every year.
Besides dynamizing the city of Porto, the main goal of the festival is to spread culture and to make it accessible to everyone. The programme includes performance projects in non-conventional spaces or in dialogue with certain places at Serralves foundation, concerts, exhibits and other activities that are yet to be announced.
