CHOUQUETTE

Forgive us for starting with the dessert, but a place like Chouquette deserves such a role-reversal! Recreating an authentic French patisserie in Porto is certainly not an easy task, but once you try their fruit tarts, their Paris Brests or their Sablé Bretons, you’ll realize owner and chef patissier Emilie did an outstanding job. Pardon my French, but this place is f****** awesome! Chouquette is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 9am and 7pm.

URBANA

Having been opened since the beginning of the year, Urbana is part of a new group of healthy food places that have been growing all over the city and gaining popularity steadily. Located in Foz do Douro, this “happy place” wants to touch both appetites and consciences, wishing to raise awareness on environmental issues and self-preservation. It sounds like something Al-Gore would invest in, but it’s actually the work of a Portuguese entrepreneur who spent a lot of time in Brazil. In fact, the Brazilian influences can be seen and felt all over the restaurant, including on the menu, where you’ll find refreshing açaí bowls and delicious tapioca sandwiches. Urbana is open every day between 8h30am and 7h30pm.

MONSTRA NACIONAL

Portugal might be popular for the codfish, the francesinha or the port wine, but never – EVER – underestimate our skills when it comes to creating inventive over-the-top sweets (Pastel de Nata, anyone?). At Monstra Nacional, you can give it a go at some of the best traditional sweets and desserts that you would find if you went on an adventure across the country. We’re talking about portuguese classics such as Ovos Moles (egg yolk and sugar mix stuffed inside a communion bread shell) from Aveiro, Pudim de Abade Priscos (a special pudding made with pork lard – sounds weird we know!) from Braga, or the insanely popular Pão de Ló! Once you visit, you’ll understand how a Portuguese Christmas feels like. Monstra Nacional is open from Monday to Saturday between 2pm and 8pm.
