5 January Events You Must Check Out In Porto

Start the year the right way and take a look at these 5 January events happening around Porto, that you just can’t miss.

Are you in Porto in January? Just because the cold is here to stay (yes, Portugal also has winters), doesn’t mean that you can’t still have fun.

Tradition is meant to be kept and Casa da Música does just that. The year will begin with the New Year’s Concert, performed by the Porto Symphonic Orchestra. There will be two sessions, both held at Casa da Música’s Suggia Room (an exquisite music hall), on the 5th at 9pm and the second on the 6th at 6pm. The repertoire will dwell around Strauss and his work. You can get tickets in person at Casa da Música, or online.

Dia de Reis (Day of Kings)

While this celebration might not be held anywhere in particular, the 6th of January is Dia de Reis. Or the Three Wise Men day. For catholics, this is the day when the baby Jesus was visited by the three kings of the East. Traditionally, portuguese eat bolo-rei on this day, so why not sit down at a fantastic bakery like Confeitaria do Bolhão or Padaria Ribeiro and have a slice? You may also encounter groups of people, mostly school children singing the “Janeiras” (traditional music to welcome the new year).

If you’re like us and stuffed your face with delicious Portuguese Xmas food, then you’re already thinking about getting back into prime form. Well, if you’re into electronica, we have an opportunity for you to shed some of those pounds!  What’s better than nine hours of heart pounding electronica beats? Having two legends of the global underground dance music scene, together, in the same room, taking you on a ride for one of Porto’s first major events of 2018.

We say major because the good folks over at the NEOPOP Festival, will be putting on said event Friday January 5th at Hardclub, with headliners Danny Tenaglia from NYC and our very own national treasure, DJ Vibe, from Lisbon. You’ll be hard pressed to find this lineup in most places around the world – so don’t hesitate! Buy yourself a ticket, put on your favorite dancing kicks and prepare to be taken on a musical journey like no other! “Music is the answer, love is the message. Be yourself”.

Porto is one of those cities that is best discovered by walking. If you’re a history lover and you like some exercise, this is the perfect event for you. On the 5th of january, take part of a nocturnal walk, starting at 9:30pm and leaves from Terreiro da Sé. This guided walk will travel from the first human traces in the area from the 8th century A.D, until present day. At a total of 5.5km this promises to be a more in-depth look at the city and its rich history. The price is 6€ per person and you can get tickets online or contact Alma at Porto for more info.

What January events will you be going to during your trip to Porto ?
