What? It’s 2019 already?
Nevertheless, happy new year! January is for new beginnings and a brand-new list of Porto events to attend in Porto. There’s not one, but two birthday parties and a lot of music, dancing and art.

Joan Miró and the death of painting

An opportunity to closely observe the works of a great painter, mainly from 1973 when Miró was preparing for a retrospective at the Grand Palais de Paris. The series of expressive canvas clearly express the artist rage and feelings and his attempt to revitalize the art of painting, as critics at the time where about to announce, “the death of painting.”

Slabdragger + Greengo

It’s sad but it’s true, our favorite underground club will be closing down in February. However, there’s still time for a last hurrah! British band Slabdragger will be visiting Portugal for the first time and bring their heavy sludge doom. Local duo Greengo will also perform. They definitely know how-to put-on a (loud) show, which will please fans of the stoner genre!

Neopop presents Laurent Garnier

On the 18thof January, batteries will be fully recharged after New Year’s Eve, so there’s no excuse not to attend Laurent Garnier’s performance at Hard Club. It’s Neopop’s way to start 2019 on the right foot, by bringing one of the pioneers DJS of the dance music scene, that has been totally dedicated to the craft for the last 30 years.

87º Anniversary Teatro Rivoli-100% Porto

Teatro Rivoli is undoubtedly one of the most important landmarks in the city, providing the most varied cultural Porto events and therefore crossing many generations. It’s now time to celebrate its 87th birthday and what better party theme than “100% Porto”? Over the course of two days, 25 artists from Porto will be performing and the program will include dance, film, music, theatre, art installations and literature, suitable for every age and taste!

“Banksy, Dismaland and Others” by Barry Cawston

Barry Cawston is considered to be Banksy’s official photographer. With his work, this exhibit was put together to showcase groundbreaking pieces from this artist, that has been using his creativity for the last 25 years to criticize society and its values . The exhibit has 44 pictures, including images from the theme park created by Banksy, Dismaland. It also includes an audiovisual installation and works by young Portuguese artists.

Jessy Lanza

Jessy Lanza is a Canadian Performer, crossing dance music with pop which originated a well-received album in 2016. The concert is part of a new concept that was recently introduced in Porto called Gig Club. This club allows members to benefit from discounts and offers, while at the same time attending shows for emerging and independent artists.
It’s also the perfect opportunity to get to know Pérola Negra, a former cabaret and exotic parlor that is on the rise to become one of main clubs/concert venues in town.

O Salgado faz anos…FEST

A birthday party that is much like a music festival, with four different stages and a line-up filled with some of the best current Portuguese bands, DJ’s and performers. The genres are various, ranging from punk to pop, to something more experimental. The list includes The Parkinsons, Solar Corona, Gin Party Soundsystem, La Flama Blanca and others that are still yet to be announced.
