3 Best Pizza Places in Porto

Is there any other food more unanimously loved than pizza? Old and young, black and white, everybody loves some pizza and everyone has their 2 cents about their favourite kind (except Hawaiians, they’re banned for life after pineapple).

As it turns out, every city has its masters when it comes to the art of making a pizza, and Porto is obviously no exception. However, as you might be about to find out soon, our city enjoys particular bragging rights in this matter. With amazing décor, great atmosphere, genuine recipes and delicious food, here are our 3 main contenders for the title of best pizza in Porto.

3 BEST PIZZA PLACES IN PORTO:

PIZZERIA ANTONIO MEZZERO

Let’s bring out the big guns right away, shall we? Formerly known as La Pulcinella, the Pizzeria Antonio Mezzero has recently taken the name of its chef and owner in order to capitalize on his outstanding achievements and growing popularity. And how could they not? With back to back 2nd place finishes at the Pizza World Championship, Antonio Mezzero (born in Italy, of course) is the most accomplished pizzaiolo in Portugal. The best proof – Mezzero won the first ever Michelin Star ever given to a pizza back in 2013, in what is arguably the highlight of his career.

As for his pizzas, these are as good as you would expect of a man with his credentials, as the best ingredients match the most qualified know-how and the end result, in our opinion,  is the best pizza in Porto. We recommend the Generale 2.0, their unofficial signature pizza with buffalo mozzarella, spicy salami, basil and dried tomatoes. Prices range from 12,50€ and 19,50€ (for an individual pizza) and the pizzeria is open from Tuesday to Sunday during meal times (noon-2h30pm and 7pm-10h30pm).

Few places have the ability to make you feel simultaneously as comfortable as if you were home and as important as if you were part of some superstar’s entourage going for a meal in a fancy place. However, this is exactly what you’ll feel stepping into Sergio Crivelli.  It’s never an easy task to bring down the concept of an entire establishment to just one word, but with Sergio Crivelli we’ll give it a try and go with “authenticity“! From the minute you step into this beautiful restaurant and feel the scent of burning wood coming out of their Neapolitan pizza oven, we have no doubt you will feel part of a big and loud Italian family – and your stomach will start to growl! And don’t get us started on the pizzas: the dough is perfect – just the right amount of crunch and fluff – and the smell is enough to make one’s mouth water just like Homer Simpson when thinking of bacon. Plus, you get to pick from an extensive selection of pizza categories (healthy, spicy, vegetarian, and even gluten-free), so you know there’s something to everyone’s taste!

Sergio Crivelli is open every day during meal times (noon-3pm and 7pm-11pm).

IL FORNAIO 178

For the last pizzeria on our list, we give you a place that brings a more modern outlook on decoration while keeping up the traditional techniques that make a true Neapolitan pizza. Located in Boavista, Il Fornaio 178 adds that little extra classy touch that makes it the best pizza place for you to bring a date to. The dim lights, the professional service, the pleasant background soundtrack – this is not your typical pizza restaurant! However, once that pizza reaches your plate, then you understand how authentic the place is after all. The amazing dough – crispier and thinner in the center but softer and fluffier around the edges – the perfectly seasoned tomato sauce and the genuine PDO mozzarella, all help elevate their seemingly uncomplicated Margherita (14€) to one of the best pizzas in Porto.

Il Fornaio 178 is open from Tuesday to Sunday during meal times (noon-3pm and 8pm-11pm).
