Flor dos Congregados has been open for 162 years and it’s still managed by the same family. Here you’ll find one of the most iconic sandwiches that takes 24 hours to make. Talk about an artisanal process! Meet Terylene, a slow-roasted pork sandwich with smoked ham and serra cheese, all combined with rustic bread. It will surprise you not only for its size but also for the unique flavours that only this slow process can provide. Thanks to this recipe, Flor dos Congregados is still to this day one of the treasures waiting to be found in downtown porto.

Tradition is alive and well at Casa Guedes, a mandatory stop when you visit Porto, where the pulled pork sandwiches are like celebrities in their own right. Taberna de Santo António

You probably know by now that Passeio das Virtudes has one of the best views, but it’s also where a restaurant filled with delicious Portuguese food hides. Taberna de Santo António is a small, rustic place with soul, where you can find the best comfort food that includes a mouth-watering bifana. It’s a simple combination: tender pork meat with a flavorful beer based sauce inside a very soft traditional Portuguese bun. It will give you the energy necessary to go up and down the very steep street close to Virtudes. Their menu also includes one of the city’s best chocolate cakes – so try to save some room!

Venham mais cinco is a unique space with a comfortable outside area, filled with vintage memorabilia which provides a nice backdrop for you to enjoy your meal. Their specialty is definitely the steak sandwich with serra cheese, mostly due to the tenderness of the meat and the combination of spices and condiments. There is also a vegetarian option with seitan and please do save some room for dessert as their chocolate cake is just to die for.

When visiting A Badalhoca you will have the true Portuguese tasca experience due to the stone walls and large wine bottles and ham serving as décor pieces. Amongst other specialties, they are known for their ham sandwich. The recipe is just as simple as the name suggests: a crispy small bread combined with some nice ham which creates a memorable flavor that will always remind you of Porto.

A Sandeira is one of the hidden gems of Porto. Located in one of those narrow and typical streets, this cozy space will definitely surprise you with its creative decor and fresh flavors. Each sandwich was named after iconic places in the city of Porto, so you can taste Clérigos which is prepared with olive paste, feta cheese, tomato and basil or Douro with ingredients like chicken, goat cheese and apple.
