Despite being only the second city in a relatively small country, visitors should never underestimate the portuense’s (name given to Porto locals) ability to party! The city boasts a huge number of bars and nightclubs which fill up every Friday and Saturday night, providing you with a great chance to mingle with the locals. Besides, given the city’s background and its eternal link to port wine and other beverages, you can expect top quality drinks at surprisingly modest prices.
Here are 5 bars worth checking out in Porto:
BONAPARTE DOWNTOWN
Bonaparte is not your typical Irish pub. Even though you’ll find dim lights, great drinks and a cool ambiance, this is also the place where whimsical photos hang from the walls and weird objects spring from every corner! It’s almost as if Saint Patrick had decided to team up the Collyer Brothers to open a bar. In fact, the setting is so carefully thought that you’ll feel like you’re in a movie set…well, at least one where you’re allowed to have a drink!

CAPELA INCOMUM

Every city has its fair share of unusual drinking places, but how about a wine bar built inside a chapel? More than a place for wine experts, Capela Incomum is most of all a bar for wine lovers. You have plenty of options to choose from, and with every glass of wine that you order you also get access to a small guide that will teach you how to properly taste it in order to get the most out of the experience. That’s exactly how the management looks at wine tasting – an experience – and we swear to God (pun intended) there is no better place in the city to sit down among friends and loved ones while enjoying a nice glass of wine along with some traditional portuguese snacks.

BREYNER 85
Breyner 85 is the kind of place where every night is a different one! With a strong cultural agenda, this is also probably the most alternative and dynamic bar on our list. A bar that organizes a death-metal festival on a Monday, and then a poetry debate on the following day. Live concerts with local amateur bands on weekends, and Karaoke Nights during the week. This is not to mention their epic Quizz Nights, where questions are also available in English! Regardless of what you’re into, you’ll find it at Breyner 85.

VIP LOUNGE

This is a special place for a special night. Located on the top floor of the Porto Palácio Congress Hotel & SPA, a visit to the VIP Lounge might be pricey, but enjoying one of the many cocktails or whiskeys available and relaxing while taking in the breath-taking views from the outdoor sundeck makes for a great drinking experience while in Porto.

BALI-HAI
For the last place on our list, we bring you a more exotic option. At Bali-Hai, a Polynesian bar located just a short walk away from the city centre, it’s all about style! The space is colourful and decorated with native elements, cocktails are served in over-the-top mugs and a mist will surround your table every time you pour water into your drink’s dry ice. In case you are one of those people who think flashy cocktails are mainly made of juice, we dare you to try their signature “Suspiro Fatal”, the strongest item on their menu and the drink that will prove you wrong!
