There is one motto you must always keep in mind when visiting Porto: The Portuguese love their bread! There’s no way around it – we eat it at breakfast, lunch and dinner; as a starter or as a main course; we use it on soups and even as desserts (we’re looking at you Rabanada!). This may come around and hit us in the butt once we get up on that scale, but for most of us, a dinner table without bread is just not properly set. As such, and luckily for visitors, it is incredibly easy to find top-quality bakeries in the city selling delicious artisanal bread.
HERE ARE 5 AMAZING BAKERIES IN PORTO WHERE YOU CAN GET DELICIOUS BREAD
CONFEITARIA DO BOLHÃO
Sorry hipsters but we’re starting with a place for the masses! Yeah, Confeitaria do Bolhão might be a bit too mainstream for some, but one should never rule out the classics, isn’t that right? Inaugurated in 1896, this is certainly one of the most popular bakeries in the entire city, as locals flock there every morning for a quick breakfast before heading off to work. Once you step inside, we guarantee you’ll be having a hard time coming up with a solid decision, as Confeitaria do Bolhão is also pretty popular for its wide bread variety. But make no mistake – there is no wrong call here! Confeitaria do Bolhão is open from Monday to Saturday between 6am and 8pm.

MASSEIRA – PADARIA ARTESANAL
Originally sold at the counters in one of the city’s most endearing street markets – Mercado Porto Belo – Masseira’s bio bread has finally found its own physical place! Recently opened in Cedofeita, this artisanal bakery certainly doesn’t cut any corners, promoting a back to basics approach of bread-making. Using nothing but biological flours, natural yeasts and plain water as a dough base, and with no addition of additives and preservatives whatsoever, baking it may take a lot longer than your average bun – but boy is it worth the wait! An old-fashioned place, for an authentic experience! Masseira is open from Tuesday to Saturday between noon and 7pm.

PÃO DA TERRA

Located inside the Matosinhos Market, Pão da Terra is yet another artisanal bakery which prides itself on the natural and preservative-free methods they use when baking their breads. In fact, this bakery takes its business model one step further, grinding the seeds and bio flours in ancient stone mills, just like our nanas used to! We invite you to visit and take your pick between 7 different varieties (spelt, olives, wheat and raisins – just to name a few), though we can promise the drool-inducing reaction will be the same for all of them! Pão da Terra is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 8am and 6pm.

As the final entry on our list and a personal favorite here at Oportoblog, we bring a different kind of bakery. Sure, having your own place is pretty cool and all but… what if you could have your own product sold all over the city? That’s exactly what Pão da Mó brings to the table! As a potential customer, what you get is easier access to a premium quality product – in this case, a fresh batch of delicious artisanal bread, super-soft on the inside but with that crispy crust we all love. In fact, if you’re preparing a secret Sunday breakfast for that special someone and want your bread delivered right at your hotel front door, you can actually place your order earlier in the week (until Friday, 6pm). However, shall you prefer to sit down to enjoy those glorious sourdough slices, rest assured you can find their delicious bread at the following locations:
Queijaria do Almada – Rua do Almada, 348
Ju de Ló – Rua Dr. Albano de Sá Lima, 107
