New month, new goals right? And as April is just around the corner, you can expect a major overhaul in Porto art scene. With the addition of some new kick-ass exhibitions and photo displays, this is a good time for our artsier readers to take a deeper dig into what the city has to offer.
HERE ARE 6 PORTO ART EXHIBITIONS YOU’VE GOT TO CHECK OUT THIS APRIL
ALEGORIA by Arlindo Silva & Sónia Neves

What happens when a skilled painter falls for a talented photographer? In Alegoria, the author’s marriage is conveyed into its own form of art – a beautiful joint work where photography and painting not only coexist, but actually enhance each other’s features. A must-see for art aficionados and for pessimists who say spouses shouldn’t work together! This exhibition is taking place until April 21st at Espaço Mira and entrance is free.
ENCONTROS by Gunter Grass
Gunter Grass was a jack of all trades. Accomplished novelist – he won a Nobel Prize for his written works – talented sculptor, gifted playwright, the man was a real artist! However, the Casa-Museu Guerra Junqueiro is currently displaying his best works as an illustrator and painter (yes, he could also do that…). Focusing on his close relationship with Portugal, where the author lived for many years, this exhibition will be up and running until late September and entrance is free of charge.
GERMINAL by Fundação EDP
Talk about a risky bet! In the 90’s, Pedro Cabrita Reis took a leap of faith and started acquiring pieces from new up-and-coming artists, hoping that one day they would become household names and legitimize his collection. Now, 2 decades later, he sold them to a cultural foundation which assembled this rich exhibition at Galeria Municipal do Porto, where you can see the very first works of artists such as Joana Vasconcelos or Jorge Queiroz. Besides his distinguished talent that made him one of the country’s most respected artists, Pedro also has – apparently – a great eye for business. The entrance is free of charge and the exhibition will run up until the 20th of May.
DIEZ MIRADAS AL ABANDONO
Emptiness can often be an appealing thing. The view of ruin, abandon and overall lack of worth is inexplicably mesmerizing, which illustrates why places such as Pripyat, Kolmanskop or Buzludzha are nowadays sought after by tourists. The demonstration Diez Miradas al Abandono offers a photographic tour of places such as these, through the lens of several different artists from Portugal, Spain and Argentina. You can catch this exhibition at the Centro Português de Fotografia (CPF) up until July 1st, and entrance is free.
HOMEM PEIXE MAR by Pepe Brix
Housed at Galeria Manifesto in Matosinhos, this beautiful photo exhibition by Azorean photographer Pepe Brix will be on until the 19th of May. Documenting the different ways diverse cultures fish and depend on the big blue ocean, Homem Peixe Mar is a testament to mankind’s ever-lasting relationship with the sea and its creatures. Once again, entrance is free.
SHADES OF SENSUALITY by Tina Trumpp
In a particularly sensitive moment regarding women’s rights and sexism, German photographer Tina Trumpp celebrates the female form with a touching tribute to its sensuality. Depicting several different women of all races, creeds and walks of life, it intends to show that women don’t need to hide their shapes and their beauty to spread a message of emancipation against both puritanism and sexual harassment. The exhibition will remain open to visitors throughout the entire month of April at Leica Store. No ticket is needed.
