Let’s start with the newest Italian restaurant in the city and, dare we say, the only place in Porto where you can try basil-flavoured ice cream! La Fontana is actually the second Italian restaurant Andrea has opened in Porto, and, much like its predecessor, its recipes are authentic and its main ingredients imported directly from Italy. Try their delicious pizzas, their creamy carbonara pasta, or give it a go at those rich ricotta-filled raviolis. Trust us, this genuine place will have you feeling like you’re dining in the Eternal City (plus, you don’t have to pay for the coperto here!). La Fontana is open from Wednesday to Monday, during meal times (noon-3pm at lunch; and 7pm-11:30pm at dinner).

MERCEARIA SABORES DAS TAIPAS

Our next stop is… (drum roll) a grocery store! Before raising your left eyebrow, let it be known that our city made gourmet grocery stores into an art form. While walking through the city centre, you’ll notice many of these vintage establishments selling extravagant items you’ve never heard of but can’t help but try it. Sabores das Taipas is a notable exception and a breath of fresh air into a business that is mostly composed of several decades-old places. Unlike its competitors, Sabores das Taipas offers breakfast and lunch service every single day, which is a great idea if you want to try some of the items you just found on their shelves. This is also a great stop for budget travellers as you can enjoy a full continental breakfast buffet for just 5€! Sabores das Taipas is open every day between 8am and 7pm.

THE GEORGE RESTAURANT & TERRACE

Because Vila Nova de Gaia isn’t just great views and wine cellars, here is yet another example of the plethora of amazing places to eat that await you on the other side of the river. Made up of four different independent spaces – restaurant, bar, terrace and events room – The George offers you 4 completely different experiences within the same building. While the restaurant boasts a more sophisticated ambiance and a menu with traditional culinary delights from the north of the country, the bar is far more relaxed, and is the perfect place to listen to some music while enjoying some dips or a cheese board. And no matter how much we try to stay away from the clichés, there is no way one can resist that terrace view! The George Restaurant is open every day for lunch (noon-3pm) and from Thursday to Monday for dinner (7pm-11pm).
