Four Must Try Places For Gluten-Free Eaters In Porto

Life ain’t simple dear coeliac readers! As the years go by, it may be getting easier to find incredible gluten free options – which is great; but at the same time, everyone keeps thinking you’re just a progressive greenhouse plant hipster – which sucks. Still, we are not here to judge you (ok, maybe just a couple of jokes here and there), but to help you out in your quest to find delicious, gluten-free foods you can enjoy in Porto without having to worry about your belly turning into a blowfish!

HERE ARE 4 PLACES THAT SERVE GLUTEN FREE FOODS IN PORTO

SERGIO CRIVELLI

Located near the sea in Matosinhos, we’re starting with an authentic Italian restaurant capable of serving gluten-free versions of pretty much all the classics. In fact, Sergio Crivelli was the very first restaurant in northern Portugal to get an official stamp of approval from the Portuguese Coeliac Association (APC), so you couldn’t be any safer! Delicious food made with the freshest, healthiest ingredients, beautiful decor, and prices suited to everyone’s wallet – what else could you want? Sergio Crivelli is open from Monday to Saturday during lunch (noon-3pm) and dinner (7pm-10pm) times.

COM CUORE

A gluten free Tea Room may sound like a weird concept for us – ordinary mortals with a regular digestive system – but for anyone with coeliac issues, it is HEAVEN ON EARTH! That’s right – at Com Cuore you will find all the sweets, croissants, pancakes and bread one desires – and it’s all GLUTEN FREE. Their offer even includes gluten free beer (drinking a beer at a tea room, how cool is that?)! Needless to say, the best eateries for coeliac disease patients are the ones where they won’t even remember their condition, and since all the products, equipment and kitchen facilities are appropriately isolated from any external threats – as they should – this tea house definitely fits the bill! Com Cuore is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10h30am and 7h30pm.

It’s no secret that in many cities being intolerant to gluten still means having to sit back and miss-out on all the local foodie adventures everybody else gets to enjoy. But not in Porto! Even though our dearest dish – Francesinha – may actually constitute a suicide attempt for a coeliac, rest assured there’s an alternative way you can enjoy this slugfest of stacked smoked meats, bread, cheese and hot sauce! At Tasquinha do Bé, a cute and tiny typical tasca, Portugal’s most popular snacks and dishes are going gluten free! Beer, Francesinha, alheira, burgers: this is a Portuguese Mecca for coeliacs!  Tasquinha do Bé is open from Wednesday to Monday during lunch (noon-3h30pm) and dinner (7pm-10pm) times.

Have you ever heard about tapioca pancakes? At Beiju Tapiocaria you can find some of the city’s most delicious versions of these alternative pancakes/crepes, with both sweet and savory options at your disposal. However, what really sets this Brazilian delicacy apart from your regular pancake, is precisely the fact that it’s 100% gluten free! Besides, prices are quite reasonable at Beiju, with some of the options priced under 4€ (everyone loves Nutella!), all the way up to 7,5€ for the more elaborate versions. Made with no gluten, lactose or sugar, but with all the love and care, and – of course – tons of flavour! Beiju Tapiocaria is open every day from 08h30am to 11pm.
